So many visitors so little time...to blog

I'm sorry that it's been so long since I updated the blog, life got busy here in Connecticut. Since the last time I updated a lot has happened...all good!

First, Jordan and I had two more visitors, Lindsey and John, and Zoey had one also, Cooper, who came up for a weekend in July. The last time they ventured up here it turned into a 10 hour road trip and they were only actually in Connecticut for not even 24 hours. So, this time they planned their trip around traffic and made it up here in great time so that we had the whole weekend together. Jordan had the weekend off so he was actually able to do all the weekend's activities with us...needless to say he was on cloud nine all weekend since he didn't have to work!

On Saturday we decided to take them down to Fairfield to see the town and go the beach for the day. Fairfield is a town down on the coast, pretty much straight south from where we are now, and is where we are looking to move when my apartment lease is up next year. So we packed ourselves a cooler with snacks, water, and beer (everything you need for a beach trip) and made our way to the beach for the day. The beach was so much fun just relaxing, laying in the sun, and swimming with the jellyfish (I guess it's jellyfish season in the long island sound). After having as much sun as we could handle we took them to our favorite sea food place in Fairfield, Black Rock Oyster Bar, to get them some fresh Connecticut seafood.
Now a little background on the Black Rock Oyster Bar, one weekend I was craving some good seafood for dinner...crab, oysters, lobsters....so Jordan asked his boss, Chase, for some suggestions of good seafood places close to the coast. After throwing out some suggestions we decided to try one of them, which is how we stumbled upon Black Rock. That night we had some of the best oysters we had had in CT so far and some yummy crab legs (pictures below). So when we went this time for lunch with Lindsey and John Black Rock again did not disappoint!
That night after cleaning up we took them to our local bar Perrotties, where everyone is starting to know our name, for a drink or two before dinner. Perrotties is a great little bar that is also a pizza place on the other side. Almost everyone that eats or drinks here is a local and knows the owners. There's a little porch on the front where the owner usually sits and welcomes everyone who comes in. It is such a friendly place and Jordan and I usually frequent it at least a couple times a week. After moving on from Perrotties we headed to dinner at an Italian restaurant called Roma's. The owner of Roma's is a member at Jordan's course which is how we knew about it and we had only heard wonderful things about it. So we pull into the parking lot of a building that has a sign that says Roma's....but all the windows are blacked out and you can't see inside, which makes it look like it's closed down. So the only thing that got us out of the car and into the door was the full parking lot with very nice cars. As we walk in the door everyone sitting at the little bar you walk into stops and stares...like we did not belong there (although we are locals at Perrotties we were not locals at Roma's). We were a little intimidated by most of the people eating in the very small dinning room area that were speaking italian and by the many locals that you could tell knew all the workers. But we held our own and ended up eating one of the best meals that we've had here so far and had a lot of fun.
The next set of visitors that we had was my Mom and Dad who came to visit in Aug and it was my Dad's first time seeing where we live now and my Mom's first time back since she helped move us in. I had so much I wanted to show them but only had a couple of days to fit it into so it turned out to be an action packed weekend.

We tried a couple different restaurants that we hadn't been to yet. Longwood Restaurant was the first that we tried; it is a restaurant in one of the little inns in Woodbury. The Inn is in an old house and is beautifully decorated and restored. We walked into the restaurant, on a Friday night, and it was dead. This restaurant had received reviews from Wine Spectator, Connecticut Magazine, and Zagat so we were expecting it to be booming with business. The wine list was huge and the food was good, but we were a bit put off being that we were the only ones dining there the whole time. It was a very nice restaurant but I don't know if it is one we will be visiting again.

The next new restaurant that we tried was Good News Cafe, this is a Woodbury gem that everyone in town knows about and goes to for a nice dinner. It is in an adorable little yellow house and the inside is decorated like an art gallery. It was very interesting place but the food was fantastic, our waitress was charming, and again the wine list was huge. We ended up having a great dinner and they even had chocolates you could order for dessert to take home with you, so they obviously won me over. I think that this is a place that we would go back to...with parents though...it is a little pricey.

When they were here I also took them on a little Connecticut coastal tour one day, we visited their friends in Rowayton at their beautiful house on the water, drove them through Fairfield to see where we might be moving to, and drove around in New Haven to settle a bet my dad and I had going (New Haven, is it Ghetto or nice? So that you know we tied because there are defiantly ghetto areas but around Yale it is really nice with great restaurants and shopping).

After our coastal tour we met Jordan at his course to go golfing and show my rents the course. We had so much fun golfing and if I remember correctly I think I won (wink wink).

Both weekends with our visitors were so much fun and it was really nice knowing our way around so that we were able to show them around and show off our new home.

2 House Guests and a Wedding

A couple weeks ago Jordan and I took a trip home to Iowa for the first time since we moved to CT.  We went home for Mallory and Nick's wedding over the 4th of July weekend.  It was such a fun weekend and a beautiful wedding!  I had the privilege to be a part of the wedding as a bridesmaid and I was so happy to share the day with Mal.  She was one of the most beautiful brides I have ever seen and the whole wedding turned out great and was so much fun.  Congrats to the new Mr. and Mrs. Mohwinkle!

It was great for both of us to be able to go home and visit our families for the holiday weekend.  The only downfall is we had to fly back on the 4th of July so we weren't able to do any celebrating for the holiday.  We were able to see fireworks from the plane though which was really cool, and it made it feel like it was the 4th.

After we returned from good ol' Cedar Rapids we welcomed our first friend visitors, Amy and Mike.  They were visiting Mike's parents in MA for a week and took the time to drive down to see us for a day.  They came down for dinner and a sleep over in the apt so we took them to dinner at Julio's Woodfire Grill and were able to have some great time the 4 of us.  Although it had been about 3 months since the 4 of us were together it felt like no time had passed and with Amy and I at the same table there was no quiet time, we had lots of catching up to do.  It was so nice having friends come to visit and to be able to show off our new home to them.  Although Jordan had to work the next day since it was a week day, the rest of us went down to Fairfield CT to the beach for the day.  It was my first trip to the CT beaches since we moved here and I was in heaven the whole time.  It was so nice being on a beach again, I forgot how much I missed it.  I also was so happy to realize just how close the beach is and how easy it is to make a trip to it for the day.  We had such a great time having our friends coming to visit and thank them so much for taking the time to drive down during their visit home!

Other then these two exciting events we are just living life in CT as usual.  Jordan's still working hard and working a lot, but still loves his job.  I am still searching for a job and playing the role of "The Real House Girlfriend of Connecticut".  We are very excited for our upcoming visitors, Lindsey and John in a couple of weeks and my parents at the beginning of Aug.

So many new things

Well...it has been a while since I have updated and I'm sorry I haven't been on top of it.  I mean I have been busy, watching all my day time TV like Day of Our Lives and The View but I think it's probably time to finally update you all on what we have been up to, although it might be a long update.

First, we finally had a free weekend where Jordan wasn't working and it was the first game that USA played in the world cup.  So we decided to go into "the city" to watch the game.  We decided to meet a couple of Jordan's friends from college and Rachel Armor in the city to watch the game.  So we hoped on the express train from Stamford CT to Grand Central station and off we went on our first train ride from Connecticut to "the city" (everyone in CT calls New York City "the City").

Jordan and I at Grand Central Stantion

Jordan, Rachel, and I at brunch

We ended up having a great weekend with Jordan's friends from college all day watching the game and after and then staying with Rachel Armor.  Rachel was a wonderful host and on sunday showed us around their neighborhood.  We had a wonderful brunch and afternoon of shopping with Rachel and then headed back to CT for our drive back to Woodbury.

The next weekend happened to be a big one...it was Jordan's 24th Birthday!!  His Aunt and Cousin came up from Virginia and his Mom surprised him from Iowa.  Although he had to work on his Birthday we still we able to take day trips and still make the weekend a special celebration.  On Sat afternoon we went to Mystic CT which is most famous for the movie Mystic Pizza being taped there.  It is a great little town that is right on the water with a little main street full of restaurants and shopping.  We walked around the downtown area for a while doing a little shopping and then ended up at a great little restaurant called S&P Oyster Company right on the water.  We ordered a yummy round of raw oysters.  It happened to be 3 out of 5 of our first times having raw oysters and we all left loving oysters and discovering our yummy fresh new england oysters are. After the great day at Mystic we came back to the area and went to a fun B-day dinner for Jordan at a tasty restaurant called Julio's Wood Fired Pizza in Southbury CT.  We had such a great weekend with Jordan's family and thank them so much for coming for the weekend and celebrating Jordan's Birthday with us!

That is the Mystic Pizza restaurant in the back ground.  We found out that they did about a quarter of their taping at the actual place and then had an exact replica built outside of the town to do the rest of the taping so they weren't disrupting the little town of Mystic.

At S&P Oyster Company with Jordan's Aunt, Cousin, and Mom

This past weekend we were invited to join Jordan's boss and his wife, Chase and Emily, down in Fairfield (where they live) to watch the USA World Cup Game and then to dinner.  Fairfield is a town right on the coast about 30 min away from where we live.  We had such a great time with the two of them and in Fairfield.  It was such a great town with a lot of restaurants and shopping downtown and a much younger crown then in Woodbury.  We ended up going to dinner at a Thai restaurant and Jordan was in heaven.  Ever since we moved here he has been craving Thai food and we haven't found a place by us yet.

We are so excited to be going home this weekend for Mallory and Nicks wedding and of course to see both of our families.  It is the first time that we will be home since we moved.  Also we are so excited for our friends Amy and Mike to visit next week so we can show them our new home!

Busy travels

Well, it's been a while since the last post but a lot has been happening since then.  Both Jordan and I were able to take trips and get a little break and vacation from our new lives in Connecticut.

I went on a girls trip with the lovely women of my family including my aunts, cousins, sister, and mom to Santa Monica, CA over mother's day weekend.  The main event of the weekend was going to the Ellen Show which as most of you know turned out to be a wonderful experience, but we were also able to get some girl time in and all catch up.  It was so nice to be with all of my favorite women and of course to do some celebrity watching.  Lindsey and I were on the lookout all weekend and we ended up seeing a lot of different celebs around Santa Monica.

One of the best meals of the weekend was when we were able to take our Mom's to the Ivy for mother's day brunch.  For those of you that are not familiar with the Ivy it is a very famous restaurant that celebs frequent.  My cousin Ashley and I were the first ones to stumble on the restaurant and find that they had an opening for brunch.  As we walked out the door to call the rest of the group to let them know to head our way we happened to pass Kelly Rutherford, the mom from gossip girl!  We also saw Jonah Hill and Kimora Lee, needless to say it was a big day and such a wonderful and fun brunch with the ladies and moms.

Brunch at the Ivy

As I said before though, the main event on the weekend was the Ellen Show.  We got to the show VERY early because we were going to be first in line to get good seats.  After waiting in line for a while and getting our tickets they came around and pulled people out of line to come back and talk with two Ellen staff members about the show.  Four of us from our 7 person group were pulled out to talk with the staff.  After talking with the staff and them getting our information we were told that there could be a chance of us being on the show.  As we met up with the rest of our group and were seated in the studio we were all so excited just to be at the show but also to know that there was a chance we could be on the show.  The whole before hand and during the show is so fun, if you ever get a chance to go to the show TAKE IT!  It is a big party the whole time, lots of music, dancing, and laughing.  Well, like I said most of you know the story but I ended up being called down to the stage to play a game and my sister and cousin joined me to play it also.  We played one where I was in a big plastic ball and the two of them were blindfolded and pushing the ball to get into a circle, and WE WON!  Because we won I was invited back a couple days later to the show to play another game for a chance to win a new car.  My mom and I both had to say goodbye to the rest of the women and ended up extending our stay 4 more days and got to go to the show again!  The whole trip, Ellen experience, and having the chance to be with all the women of my family was so much fun and made me realize just how lucky I am!

Waiting in line for Ellen

A week after I got back from California, Jordan left for Mexico to go on a guys trip with all his buddies from college.  He was there for 4 days and had so much fun catching up with all his buddies and re-living his college days.  I'm sure after all of those guys were there, Mexico is just not sure what hit it.  After 4 days of sun, adult drinks, and not a lot of sleep they were all ready to come home, but were not ready to get back to the real world.  For a week after they got back emails were going back and forth about how they just couldn't get back into the working hours and were already ready to get back into the sun with a drink in their hands.

Now, the two of us are back in Connecticut and ready to do some exploring and small trips with in our own state.  Jordan's next weekend off we are going to do some exploring and I'm sure there will be many stories to share!

I'm not in Kansas anymore...

Well I had my first experience with the "I'm not in Kansas anymore Todo" syndrome yesterday.  I wanted to take a break from all of my job searching that I have been diligently working on every day.  So I thought I would like to go explore Waterbury.

*a little background on Waterbury.  When we first moved here anytime we asked people about downtown Waterbury they all had the same face expression, which would be the same face expression as if you asked most people do you like brussel sprouts.

The area in Waterbury that Jordan's golf course is in is really nice, and very well to do.  It is on the outskirts of the city, closer to Woodbury then Waterbury.  So we hadn't really explored the downtown area of Waterbury.  I decided to put all the opinions that we had received behind me and see for myself.  So what other place would be better to judge a city on then the Mall.  So I put a cute little outfit on and off I went to the Mall just to peruse and see what it is all about.

As I walk into the Mall my hopes start to go down a bit,  but I decided not to judge yet.  After walking a bit and seeing not one store that I would shop in, I found an H&M.  I thought well this is a good start so I spent a little time in there and then decided I needed to see what else this little Mall offered.  Well I found out that the answer to that was nothing!

So I left with my spirits crushed saying...moral of the story, I don't think I'm going to be spending very much of my time in downtown Waterbury.  At that time is when I realized...I'm not in the big city anymore.

Don't worry about me and my shopping obsession though, I have New York city just an hour and a half away that I can get some shopping therapy in and this weekend I will be in LA!

Staying busy

This weekend was our first weekend just the two, well three, of us here in Woodbury CT.  No guests, no plans, just us fending for ourselves.  Believe it of not we had a great weekend and it was really nice it being just us (but we still love visitors...please come visit).  The weather turned out to be beautiful, after a cold and rainy week so we decided to get outside and do things around woodbury.

Friday night we used our new grill to cook dinner.  I am on the 3rd floor and have a porch but we can't use the grill up on the porch because it is to close to the siding, so we carry the grill down the stairs and cook right outside the door on the lawn.  It turns out to be really nice because we open our windows so you can still smell the grill and we can still chat from the apt to the lawn, so it feels like we are just grilling out in our back yard.  We had a very tasty meal with chicken from the grill out on our patio in the very nice weather.

My apartment is the top windows and the little porch you can see on the corner

Saturday was a pretty laid back day, being it was the first day of Jordan's work.  He was pretty tired after working and I was in a bit of a fog due to muscle relaxants that I was on (I had a back spasm and had to go the doctor, but everything is ok now).  We were able to try a new pizza place in the area though called Pit Road Pizza the whole restaurant is nascar theme, I know pretty classy.  It was new york style pizza with huge slices, but was really good!

Today was a scorcher, 89 degrees, so we thought why not get outside in this warm weather and have a picnic.  So after packing up lunch and doing some research of where the park is in town we took off driving.  About 30 min later we were driving down a dirt road that dead ends into a man's house who was not very happy that we were turning around in his driveway.  It kind of reminded us of a sceen straight out of Deliverance, but we made it out safe with no one chasing after us with a shotgun.  We finally found a very nice park on the other side of Main Street that we were able to have our picnic in.  Zoey really enjoyed doing some sun bathing outside while we ate our lunch.

Tonight we are heading to a restaurant in town called Carmen Anthony's Fishhouse, where on sunday's they have half price bottles of wine!  It's a big night because Jordan doesn't have to be at work until 6am tomorrow instead of 5:30am! So we are planning to do up the town big! ;)

Life in the Grass Lane

Jordan is now officially an employee of the Country Club of Waterbury.  His first day of work was on Sat, May 1st...yes he has to work on the weekends!  It went very well and he ended up loving it.  He has to be at work at 5:30am on weekends and 6:00am on weekdays so that was a bit of a struggle getting up the past couple days to be at work that early.  He came home after his first day of work and only had good and exciting things to say about the job and really liked all the people that he had met so far.  He spent most of the day with the other assistant superintendent and so far they get along really well.

As I said though, it is very early to get up.  He did take a nap after his first day, but today has been soldiering on and hasn't taken a nap yet!  He also told me today "My alarm went off this morning and I thought NO, and then I thought man I have to do this the rest of my life, when am I going to sleep in".  I know after the first week he will already be used to getting up that early though, unlike myself, he is actually good at getting up in the morning!

Before his first day we went to dinner with his boss at the club, last thursday.  We both had so much fun and got to meet a lot of the members that were also eating there.  The club is very nice inside and we ate down in the Pub area which was just renovated.  This was the first time I met his boss and I really liked him.  I can definitely see Jordan and him getting along and working really well together.  They also have a new head chef at the club who came from being head chef at Tom Calicio's restaurant in Las Vegas, so of course the food was amazing!  I guess he has really done a lot already for the dining part of the club, which hadn't been doing very well the past couple of years.  There was some talk about Tom Calicio coming and playing golf at the club sometime...but don't worry if he or any other celebrity comes and plays I will make Jordan take pics!

Here are some pictures of Jordan's Golf Course

Quick but very important update

I just wanted to update everyone on this, because if you know the two of us you will not believe it, Jordan and I have joined a Gym!  Please everyone close your mouth and keep reading, I know it is a surprise to most of you but we decided it was needed.  So pretty much next time you see the two of us you will not recognize us because we are going to be so buff and in shape you won't even be able to believe it.  We will keep you updated on how this whole gym thing goes for us...being that we are new to the scene.

Firsts

Well there are firsts for everything, first time even being in Connecticut, first time living in New England,  and this weekend we had a couple of firsts since we have lived in Connecticut.

We had our first group of guests after a week of living here.  Lindsey (my sister), John (brother in law), Becky (1 of 2 sister's that are our best friends), Nick (Becky’s bf), and Cooper (my nephew and Zoey’s cousin) all came to visit us and help break in our new home.

Lindsey & John

Becky & Nick

Cooper & Zoey

Becky and Nick road the train in from New York and Lindsey and John drove up from Washington D.C.  After picking up Becky and Nick from the train station we took them to a local place, where we already know some of the waitresses, Dottie’s Diner (coming soon a whole post on this diner).  They were able to meet the nice people we were had already met at the diner and also taste the most wonderful donuts ever, Dottie’s homemade donuts.  After this very wholesome lunch we decided we needed a drink so we took a trip out to the middle of nowhere to a local winery, McLaughlin Winery.  At the end a dirt road we saw a beautiful old house on top of a hill with vines and fields surrounding it.  We went in for a tasting which was very fun and we learned a lot about the winery and wines and then because it was a beautiful day decided to have a glass and sit outside in the sun.  Although the wine wasn’t the best we had ever had the settings made up for it, as you can see in these pictures.  This was also the first time that Jordan and I had met Nick so it gave us a great opportunity to grill him and make sure we could let him into our little “cousins” group that the Armor and Jones girls have, we are a pretty tough group to get into.

Lindsey and John arrived and we had a chance to catch up and get warmed up for dinner with some cheese, crackers, and wine.  After fixing ourselves up and getting all pretty we headed off to dinner at a local Woodbury restaurant called John’s Café.  We had heard it was a small restaurant with only about 15 tables, but for some reason still decided that our group would be ok here.  A little fyi if you don’t know the Armor and Jones girls, we can get really loud and usually end up getting looks from surrounding tables even if we are at a large restaurant.  John’s Café ended up being excellent, the food, wine, atmosphere, and everything else was absolutely wonderful.  Although halfway through dinner we started to notice that a couple of the tables around us were starting to give us looks as our decibels got louder and louder.  By the end of our dinner we had pretty much the whole restaurant staring us down.  We decided it was probably time for us to leave these poor diners to their peaceful meals so we stood up to leave.  Walking out though was like a walk of shame…the restaurant grew silent and people followed us with their eyes out of the place.

We had a toast to our visitors, new home, and almost getting kicked out of a restaurant

So not only was this a first for visitors, but it was the first for getting stared out of the restaurant and almost getting kicked out of our adorable small town.  But for those of your who do know the Armor and Jones girls…are you surprised?
Over all it was a wonderful weekend with out first group of guests and we can’t wait for our next round.

P.S. Don’t worry Nick, you passed the Jones girl test and you totally fit in with this group!

Starting out

Well it's official, Jordan and I are now Connecticuters (we hear that is what we are called out here)!  We have moved in, unpacked, and are starting to get settled hear on Tuttle Road.

The little town that I found my apt in is Woodbury and it is probably one of the most adorable little towns I've ever been to.  There is a Main Street that runs straight through the middle of it that has everything on it.  Little restaurants and shops, but no chains, which I love!!  They have rules for businesses along the main street like; signs can't be bigger then a certain size and they vote if business can open a store on the street or not, so everything is very nicely managed and it looks adorable.  It is what you would think a small new england town would look like. Everyone that we have met here in stores, waitresses, or just neighbors have all been so nice, I don't think there is a mean person that lives in the town.  Outside of Woodbury there are a ton of other little towns that are very close that have more then Woodbury so we can get to anything that we need quickly, like Target, Grocery Stores, Malls, etc.

The apartment that I found is also really cute (if you can't tell already I think everything that we have seen so far is cute).  As most of you know, I signed the lease and put the deposit down before I even got here and saw the place, so it was a huge relief when we pulled in and I loved it!  The whole complex has 11 buildings and sits on a huge pond with so much land around it.  Zoey loves having all the grass around to run in, since she was used to going right on the sidewalk.

Jordan doesn't start work until May 1st so the weekend we moved in we went by the course just to see it.  It is absolutely beautiful.  He went by the course to meet his boss and some of the others that he will be working with and it went really well.  Everyone that he met that day was so nice and welcoming and he is really looking forward to starting.  They are having us at the club for dinner this week to meet some of the members, I'm really excited to meet all of them and hopefully meet some of the local Woodburians.
